Nadal: ecco dove giocherò il prossimo torneo

Indian Wells torna finalmente a marzo, segno di un mondo che almeno dal punto di vista pandemico sta lentamente tornando alla normalità. E non è poco di questi tempi. Parlare di sport e di tennis mai come in questo momento è così piacevole. Il ricco torneo californiano, cancellato a causa del Covid-19 nel 2020 e spostato nell’insolito “slot” autunnale di ottobre l’annata passata, segnerà nuovamente l’inizio della stagione dei tornei Masters 1000. Il “BNP Paribas Open”, questo il nome ufficiale del torneo, è un evento combined, ovvero che vede impegnati contemporaneamente uomini e donne, e si gioca nella splendida cornice dell’Indian Wells Tennis Garden, una struttura da 29 campi nata nel 2000 e acquisita insieme al torneo nel 2009 da mister Larry Ellison, imprenditore milionario fondatore della Oracle Corporations.

Terra di conquista in passato di nomi di altissimo livello, possiamo tranquillamente dire che nel 2021 ha avuto un anno di transizione con il successo del britannico Cameron Norrie sul georgiano Nikoloz Basilashvili per 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Non ce ne vogliano questi due generosissimi mestieranti della racchetta, ma il ritorno in calendario nella sua posizione originale probabilmente ne farà nuovamente un traguardo ambito per tutti i migliori. Allora c’era chi come Djokovic veniva dallo scottante ko degli US Open in cui gli era sfuggito il Grande Slam, chi come Daniil Medvedev proprio a Flushing Meadows aveva conquistato il primo major della carriera ed era evidentemente scarico, chi come Stefanos Tsitsipas e Alexander Zverev era logorato dalla già estenuante stagione alle spalle e chi come i vari Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal e Dominic Thiem aveva alzato bandiera bianca nel corso dell’anno a causa di infortuni.

Anche a Indian Wells, come già accaduto al primo grande evento dell’anno, gli Australian Open, mancherà Novak Djokovic per questioni legate alla mancata vaccinazione contro il Covid-19 così come mancherà Roger Federer ancora ben lontano dal ritorno. Il parterre de roi al via è comunque di assoluto livello e si rinnoverà il duello Medvedev-Nadal dopo la supersfida finale degli Australian Open. Occhi puntati soprattutto su Rafael Nadal, unico giocatore tra quelli scesi in campo in stagione ad essere ancora imbattuto: 15 incontri giocati nel 2022 e 15 vittorie. Sarà per questo che i siti di scommesse, esaminati da Wincomparator, danno il maiorchino favorito? I trionfi di Rafa, quest’anno, sono arrivati nei tornei di Melbourne Summer Set, Australian Open e Acapulco. Mai in carriera il mancino di Manacor aveva avuto un inizio di stagione così strabiliante. Negli ultimi due tornei, tra l’altro, Nadal ha sconfitto Daniil Medvedev che era dato grande per vincente da addetti ai lavori e bookmaker. Lo spagnolo arriva in California con rinnovate velleità di successo e a Indian Wells cercherà il poker dopo i trionfi del 2007, 2009 e 2013.

Ci aspettiamo una reazione da parte del già citato Medvedev. Nel frattempo l’allievo di Gilles Cervara è diventato il numero uno del mondo ma i venti di guerra soffiati dalla sua Russia sull’Ucraina ne hanno quasi offuscato l’impresa. Quest’anno, come detto, si è imbattuto due volte in un Nadal in formato “super” e al BNP Paribas Open dovrà cambiare marcia se vorrà alzare al cielo il primo trofeo della stagione. In passato, Medvedev non ha mai avuto un grande feeling con questo evento che si gioca in mezzo al rovente deserto californiano: basti pensare che è l’unico grande torneo sul cemento in cui non ha mai neanche raggiunto i quarti di finale. È vero che gli manca ancora un titolo in bacheca nel 2022, ma l’ultimo anno solare per lui è stato a dir poco strepitoso.

Da tenere d’occhio anche il connazionale Andrey Rublev. Il russo era risultato positivo al Covid-19 verso la fine del 2021, il che ne aveva ostacolato la sua preparazione per la nuova stagione. Non aveva partecipato a nessun evento prima degli Australian Open uscendo poi al terzo turno contro il croato Marin Cilic, e dopo la semifinale a Rotterdam ecco i due exploit che ne avevano fatto salire le quotazioni in vista del Masters 1000 di Indian Wells: i titoli all’Open 13 Provence di Marsiglia e, soprattutto, quello a Dubai. Il suo schierarsi apertamente contro la guerra voluta dal suo paese ne ha alzato l’indice di gradimento anche tra gli appassionati che nei suoi incontri di certo non gli faranno mancare il sostegno.

E se nel 2022 non hanno finora brillato né il tedesco Alexander Zverev né il greco Stefanos Tsitsipas, altri due nomi che di solito trovano spazio sulle lavagne degli allibratori, si è invece fatto largo il canadese Felix Auger-Aliassime. Il duro lavoro svolto con “zio” Toni Nadal ha dato i frutti: dopo aver vinto con il Team Canada l’ATP Cup di inizio stagione, ha finalmente potuto mettere in bacheca anche il primo titolo individuale del tour vincendo l’ATP 500 di Rotterdam e la settimana successiva ha sfiorato il bis perdendo in finale a Marsiglia dal già citato Rublev. Il giocatore di Montreal è uno da non perdere di vista anche negli States.

E tra i giocatori che possono far bene a Indian Wells vogliamo citare anche gli italiani Matteo Berrettini e Jannik Sinner. La superficie si confà al meglio al tipo di gioco di entrambi: Berrettini, dopo la semifinale agli Australian Open e i quarti nella parentesi su terra a Rio de Janeiro, si è arreso nuovamente a un problema muscolare agli addominali al primo turno del torneo di Acapulco, ma l’entità è stata meno grave che in passato, ha avuto modo di riposarsi e sui campi veloci californiani aspettiamoci le sue bordate con il servizio e il dritto. Sinner, invece, ha tanto da dimostrare dopo la separazione dal coach Riccardo Piatti e il nuovo connubio con Simone Vagnozzi. Nello scorso fine settimana è stato protagonista in Slovacchia con la nazionale in Coppa Davis e grazie a due successi in singolare ha trascinato l’Italia alla fase finale del torneo. A Indian Wells, oltre a cercare gloria personale, farà anche le prove in vista del successivo Miami Open dove dovrà difendere i punti conquistati con la finale del 2021.
