Gli amanti del serve & volley, delle volée, delle discese a rete, di quel tennis costantemente all’attacco negli ultimi anni sono particolarmente delusi. Lo scambio da fondo campo ha preso il sopravvento, non solo sulla terra, ma anche sulle superfici veloci. Basta vedere l’usura dell’erba sui campi di Wimbledon per capire come il gioco sia cambiato.

Ma il gioco offensivo, fatto di attacchi profondi e di discese a rete ha lasciato, e quando viene usato lascia negli appassionati un ricordo indelebile. Sono quei punti che tutti aspettano e che fanno entusiasmare maggiormente. Certo non è semplice, per andare a rete c’è bisogno di un tocco sopraffino. Una manualità che non tutti hanno e che per molti è quasi sconosciuta.

Proveremo ora a mettere in fila quelli che secondo noi sono stati i più grandi specialisti dei colpi a rete, giocatori dotati di enorme coraggio e una manualità fuori dal comune.

#10 Rafael Nadal

Qualcuno, già lo sappiamo, storcerà il naso. Ma come? Il più grande “pallettaro” della storia, l’uomo che ha incarnato più di tutti la simbiosi perfetta con la terra rossa inserito tra i migliori giocatori di questa categoria? Beh, andatevi a vedere e rivedere le soluzioni che è capace di trovare Nadal quando si avvicina alla rete. Praticamente letale.

#9 Jack Kramer

Fu uno dei precursori delle discese a rete. Tra i migliori giocatori degli anni ’40 Kramer amava il gioco offensivo. La sua manualità sotto rete e il suo potente servizio hanno fatto di lui il primo grandissimo interprete del serve & volley. Solo 3 gli Slam vinti in singolare, 6 in doppio e 1 in misto, ma non fatevi ingannare dai numeri, allora il passaggio al professionismo precludeva la possibilità di partecipare ai grandi tornei. Kramer era un attento conoscitore del gioco e sapeva esattamente dove l’avversario poteva rispondere, per questo era così formidabile a rete.

#8 Pat Cash

Erede della straordinaria scuola australiana, Pat Cash fu uno dei più grandi interpreti del gioco a rete. Il serve & volley per lui era la normalità. Gli infortuni non gli consentirono di avere la carriera che sperava, ma quel successo a Wimbledon nel 1987 rimarrà nella storia. Per lui la volée è il colpo più importante, tanto che in un video sul canale youtube ATP ha spiegato il segreto per un colpo perfetto.

#7 Pat Rafter

Esponente sublime della scuola australiana Rafter è stato uno dei top nelle discese a rete. Come per molti in questa classifica il serve & volley era un fondamentale ripetuto e in cui era formidabile. Rafter, che ha vinto 2 Us Open, ha un unico rimpianto: non essere riuscito a vincere Wimbledon. Pete Sampras e Goran Ivanišević lo hanno battuto in finale, spezzando il sogno di conquistare lo Slam più antico.

#6 Boris Becker

Il tedesco è stato un grandissimo sotto rete. Ha vinto tutti gli Slam sui campi veloci, non riuscendo mai a raggiungere la finale del Roland Garros, nonostante abbia ricoperto spesso le prime 3 posizioni del ranking Atp. Per descrivere il suo stile di gioco prenderemo in prestito le parole del grande Gianni Clerici: “Nato per errore fuori dalla Gran Bretagna, non fu meno volleatore di Edberg. Più precoce, vinse Wimbledon a diciassette anni, e raggiunse per sette volte la finale. Soprannominato Bum Bum da cronisti incompetenti, ebbe, oltre al vigore, manina fatata”.

#5 Roger Federer

Molti si sorprenderanno di trovare così in basso Roger Federer, ma giocando in un momento storico dove le discese a rete non vanno per la maggiore lo svizzero non si è mai potuto esprimere al meglio in questo fondamentale. Più volte ha dimostrato di essere tra i grandi a rete e le sue tante vittorie a Wimbledon lo dimostrano. Ci saremmo sicuramente divertiti vedendo lo svizzero in un altro periodo storico, quando andare a rete sui campi veloci era un mantra.

#4 Pete Sampras

Altro numero 1. Negli anni ’90 ha dominato sui campi veloci di tutto il mondo. Un servizio potente e un tocco preciso a rete lo hanno reso uno dei giocatori più forti degli anni ’90. Le volée erano uno dei suoi maggiori punti di forza, in cui riusciva a combinare perfettamente il tocco, la potenza e una grande precisione. Ma anche lo smash era uno dei suoi punti di forza. Questo costringeva gli avversari, quando l’americano scendeva a rete, a passanti chirurgici. E non sempre questo difficilissimo colpo riesce.

#3 Rod Laver

Un giocatore unico e completo. Formidabile nel serve & volley e in grado di giocare passanti imprendibili. Le sue volée erano perfette, ma la difficoltà di giocare contro l’australiano era l’imprevedibilità. Dritto, rovescio, pallonetti volée, non c’era un fondamentale in cui non eccelleva. E’ per questo che ha vinto tutto. E’ stato l’unico giocatore ad aver conquistato per due volte il Grande Slam. Numeri da brividi, che non descrivono la forza di un giocatore unico.

#2 John McEnroe

Molti si sorprenderanno di vedere McEnroe solo in seconda posizione. Nell’immaginario di tutti il giocatore a rete per eccellenza è lui. Contrapposto a Bjorn Borg più fondocampista, McEnroe a rete ha avuto pochi eguali. Il suo tocco magico, unito a un ottimo servizio lo ha sempre portato ad attaccare. La volée dell’americano è stata unica: quasi piatta, dal movimento breve, precisissima e personalissima in tutta la varietà del gioco di rete (dritto, rovescio, drop-volley, demi-volée).

#1 Stefan Edberg

Unico nel suo genere Edberg portò il gioco a rete in un’altra dimensione. Le sue volée erano spesso decisive, e il suo gioco serve & volley è stato diverso da tutti i giocatori prima di lui e da quelli che lo hanno seguito. Dotato di un servizio non potentissimo, ma molto preciso, lo svedese si distingueva per la velocità che gli consentiva di effettuare la volée molto vicino alla rete. Una volta nei pressi della rete, Edberg sfoderava un impareggiabile gioco di volo, semplice, pulito, essenziale. Soprattutto la volée di rovescio non lasciava scampo: alta in lungolinea, velocissima in diagonale, dolce quando stretta e corta, o in avanzamento, a volte scavata da terra, si meritò la qualifica di miglior prima volée del circuito. Sei Slam vinti e cinque persi, tra cui un Roland Garros che non gli consentì di fare il Career Grand Slam.

    E poi Rafter davanti a Sampras??

    • Stefan Edberg sarebbe orgoglioso del titolo di piu’ forte tennista di rete..in effetti e’ il n.1 degli umani..poi ci sono gli Dei che fan classifica a se..e li SuperMac spadroneggia..lassu’ nell’Olimpo del tennis.

      • Umani? Stai scherzando spero. Edberg è nell’Olimpo con McEnroe e Roger. Purtroppo non ho mai visto gli australiani degli anni 60 .

  2. Mi permetterei di suggerire anche Vijay Amritraj e Henri Leconte….nei quarti di Wimbledon 81 Armitraj giocò i primi due set contro Connors (non un signor nessuno…) vincendoli ma perdendo poi al quinto come non ho mai visto prima ne ho visto dopo giocare a tennis…ovviamente, parere personale…

    • Come puro serv and volley Edberg è stato forse il più grande insieme a John McEnroe. Come kamikaze si fiondavano a rete “a prescindere” e hanno rischiato di vincere pure una finale del Roland Garros con questo modo di giocare se non fossero stati battuti dal solito pallettaro di turno. Ricordo certe discese a rete di Edberg capace in avanzamento di staccarsi le volee dallo stomaco. Federer è uno che col talento che si ritrova è capace di fare tutto ma non si può dire che sia un tennista da rete. Nell’ultima fase della carriera lo abbiamo visto scendere a rete più spesso ma per accorciare gli scambi forse non per pura vocazione. È vero però che lo svizzero quando ha la ventura di ritrovarsi nei pressi della rete è capace di soluzioni magnifiche ma ribadisco i suoi punti secondo me li risolve soprattutto con tocchi magistrali da fondo e poi gli capita di venire a rete quando il punto è praticamente fatto. La buon anima di Clerici mi perdoni.
