Di momenti storici gli Internazionali d’Italia ne hanno vissuti e ospitati parecchi nei loro quasi cento anni di storia dal 1930 a oggi. Il fantastico teatro del Foro Italico ha visto calpestare i propri campi da autentiche leggende del tennis, che si sono dati battaglia sulla terra rossa senza esclusione di colpi, per scrivere il proprio nome nell’albo d’oro di uno dei tornei più importanti e amati del circuito.
Tra questi momenti storici c’è sicuramente l’epica finale dell’edizione 2006 tra Rafael Nadal e Roger Federer. Una partita che rimarrà nella storia del tennis e che, insieme alla finale di Wimbledon del 2008, ha contribuito a definire e far fare il definitivo salto di qualità alla rivalità tra due dei tennisti più grandi della storia.
Vent’anni lo spagnolo, venticinque ancora da compiere lo svizzero. Federer si presenta al torneo di Roma assetato di rivincita, dopo la sconfitta in semifinali al Roland Garros dell’anno prima e dopo aver ceduto a quello che stava già diventando il re incontrastato della terra rossa nella finale del Masters di Monte Carlo. Nadal, invece, si presenta al Foro Italico da campione in carica e dopo quella finale diventerà il più giovane tennista di sempre ad aver difeso il suo titolo a Roma.
Già perché dopo cinque ore e cinque minuti di incredibile battaglia (all’epoca le finali dei Masters si giocavano al meglio dei cinque set), l’allora numero due del mondo ebbe la meglio sul numero uno, che dovette rimandare la sua prima vittoria al Foro, vittoria che, ad oggi, non è ancora riuscito a cogliere.
Una partita davvero incredibile, un film. Un match che ogni volta che sembrava indirizzato da una parte, poi si spostava dall’altra. Concluso con un tie-break drammatico al quinto set, vinto dal maiorchino. Immagini che resteranno per sempre impresse nella storia del tennis mondiale.
