Santopadre ha annunciato la separazione in termini lavorativi con Berrettini alla fine del mese di ottobre, al termine di una stagione da incubo che ha visto sprofondare in classifica il proprio assistito (complici anche gli infortuni).
Dalle parole di entrambi, però, filtra tutto l’affetto e la stima che i due si riconoscono dopo una partnership lunga più di dieci anni. Lo stesso Santopadre, infatti, intervistato da SkySport, ha speso ancora una volta parole al miele per il suo Matteo.
“È stata una decisione presa insieme, secondo noi inevitabile per il bene di Matteo. Era opportuno che cambiasse, così abbiamo preso questa decisione. La cosa eccezionale è che il rapporto tra noi è rimasto sano perché questa separazione è avvenuta nei tempi giusti. Per tanti motivi c’era la necessità e l’esigenza di fare un passo indietro.
Sono successe tante cose. C’è stata una concatenazione di eventi che hanno messo alla prova la testa e il fisico di Matteo. Adesso deve guardare avanti, c’è ancora qualche bella pagina da scrivere. Lui deve stare nei primi 20 al mondo, ha le carte per raggiungere di nuovo questa classifica. Non arrivi numero 6 per caso”.
Nel continuo dell’intervista, il coach ha parlato anche dei miglioramenti di Jannik Sinner e del grande successo ottenuto dall’Italia in Coppa Davis.
