Omar Camporese, ex tennista vincitore di due titoli Atp ed oggi commentatore televisivo, ha rilasciato una lunga ed interessante intervista ai microfoni di Fanpage.it. Durante la chiacchierata, il 55enne bolognese ha toccato tantissimi argomenti. In primis, il trionfo azzurro in Coppa Davis, mostrandosi però non eccessivamente entusiasta del successo e criticando il format che caratterizza la competizione da ormai qualche anno. In secondo luogo, l’ex numero 18 al mondo si è soffermato sul tennis moderno, spiegando che a suo modo di vedere il livello medo del circuito si è parecchio abbassato. Dunque si è giunti alle prospettive di Jannik Sinner per il 2024 e allo sfortunato momento che sta attraversando Lorenzo Musetti. Vi proponiamo di seguito un estratto delle sue considerazioni.
Camporese: “Quella vinta dall’Italia non è la vera Davis. Sinner? Noi non avremmo mai rifiutato la convocazione”
“Credo che non sia stata un’impresa perché la squadra è forte. Ci doveva credere e ci ha creduto. Premessa: questa non è la Davis. Abbiamo vinto sì, ma non è la Davis delle cinque partite, è un torneo”, ha esordito Camporese chiamato a commentare la bella cavalcata degli azzurri in quel di Malaga. Poi ha rincarato la dose affermando: “Questo format è orribile, non ti fa avere i sentimenti di quella Coppa Davis vera e propria che si giocava prima. Però l’Italia ha vinto la Coppa Davis, si chiama ancora così”.
Secondo l’ex tennista, il formato della competizione rischia di dare troppo peso ad una componente: la fortuna. “Giocando così tante partite, e riducendosi tutto su una settimana, rischi di trovare una nazione decimata. Vedi il Canada o la Spagna senza i due giocatori più forti, gli USA e anche l’Italia della prima fase senza Berrettini. Questo format è brutto anche per quello e la gente rimpiange quella vecchia. La Coppa Davis una volta era vissuta. Ti posso aggiungere anche Fabio Fognini che negli ultimi anni ha tirato sempre la carretta, mettendoci la faccia. Quella era la Coppa Davis, sentita da tutti”, ha sottolineato.
Immancabile, a questo punto, la domanda sulla rinuncia di Sinner alla fase a gironi. Glaciale la risposta di Camporese: “Capisco che su 365 giorni all’anno uno abbia bisogno di prendere una pausa perché sarebbe altrimenti impossibile fisiologicamente, però non durante la Coppa Davis perché è l’unica manifestazione che giochi per la tua Nazione. Quindi è giusto che uno debba giocare per la sua nazione, ma per rispetto di tutti: per rispetto del giocatore, dei suoi compagni, dei suoi fan, degli italiani. Trovo obbligatorio giocare per l’Italia. Se fosse successo a noi, ci avrebbero dato trent’anni di galera. È così … è la verità. Ma sai qual è il problema? Che a noi non sarebbe mai passato per l’anticamera del cervello rifiutare la Coppa Davis, era vitale per noi indossare la maglia azzurra“.
Camporese e i giocatori moderni: “Sembrano delle macchine uscite da una catena di montaggio”
Come vi abbiamo anticipato in apertura, l’ex giocatore emiliano ci ha tenuto a fare una riflessione sul tennis moderno, sminuendo il valore qualitativo attualmente offerto dal circuito: “I troppi soldi che circolano stanno rovinando il tennis. Per quello non c’è più il giocatore che tira. Mentre negli anni ‘90 c’erano trenta giocatori che potevano vincere i grandi slam, adesso se prendi la classifica dei primi venti ci sono due giocatori che hanno vinto i grandi slam. Gli altri non hanno vinto niente. Io ho appena fatto sia la coppa Davis di settembre che quella di Malaga, ero negli studi Rai di Milano. Io vedevo l’atteggiamento dei giocatori che dal primo punto fanno questo pugnetto, stanno sotto 4-0, fanno un punto ed ecco il pugnetto. Non c’è più niente di vero, di umano. Sembrano delle macchine uscita da una catena di montaggio“.
Non tutti, però, appartengono a questa categoria: c’è un ristretto novero di tennisti che, infatti, riesce a rientrare nelle grazie di Camporese. “Allora quando vedo il giocatore che battibecca ancora, come McEnroe e come tanti degli anni ‘90, penso a Medvedev o a Rune, Djokovic, dico allora c’è ancora qualcosina di umano? Perché dai ci sta! Ci sta il rincuorarsi, il farsi forza, il battibeccare con l’arbitro. Ci sta tutto perché ragazzi stiamo parlando di un giocatore di tennis, di un atleta che sta facendo fatica, cercando di vincere una partita per guadagnare dei soldi. Da un punto di vista umano ci stanno tutte queste cose”, ha spiegato.
Camporese: “Sinner numero 1? Attenzione, è molto difficile. Su Musetti…”
Passando a Sinner, invece, Camporese ha predicato calma spiegando che l’ultimo step in avanti è quello più complicato da fare: “Se stiliamo una classifica settimanale o mensile ti dico che Sinner ora potrebbe essere il giocatore più forte del mondo. Però attenzione, adesso: sul veloce, indoor, due su tre ovvero nelle condizioni migliori per lui. Ha giocato benissimo le Finals e ci ha fatto vincere la Davis, ma dire che può diventare numero 1 e vincere uno Slam… attenzione. Questo perché gli Slam sono in condizioni diverse: al caldo, all’aperto, tre su cinque e viene fuori anche una componente fisica, mentale e lì diventa più difficile. Lui può migliorarsi perché si alza ogni giorno e si chiede come crescere, ce ne sono veramente pochi così ed è ammirevole. Però dire che può diventare numero uno… è molto difficile. In questo momento vedo Alcaraz leggermente più avanti, ha vinto Wimbledon e gli US Open, Sinner non ancora. E parliamo di un ragazzo più giovane”.
Guardando al 2024 e al definitivo salto di qualità, Camporese non ha dubbi: l’ultimo step è quello relativo al rendimento nei tornei Major. “Indoor sul veloce, è il massimo per Jannik. Credo che se lui vuole diventare numero uno deve gestire per bene i tornei dello Slam. Dal numero 4 al numero 1 ci sono mille punti, e sono tanti. Deve fare attenzione al periodo primavera-estate perché quello è il momento in cui si gioca sulla terra battuta e lui lì deve fare un salto in avanti. Quella è la parte incognita dell’anno. Sono tre mesi molto importanti che fanno la differenza. Lui l’anno scorso è arrivato in semifinale a Wimbledon ed è un torneo che può vincere. In Australia è difficile perché si gioca al caldo, può far bene ma vincerlo secondo me è dura. In America può vincere di più. È difficile perché negli Slam ci vogliono componenti diverse rispetto ai tornei: non è uno sprint ma una mezza maratona. Non so se lui è pronto per questo“, ha detto.
Camporese su Musetti: “Il suo non è stato un calo mentale”
Infine, interrogato sulla crisi di gioco e risultati di Musetti, Camporese ha dimostrato ancora una volta di avere le idee chiare: “Musetti non può perdere in quel modo contro Kecmanovic in Coppa Davis. I valori sono diversi. Per me Musetti è quello che gioca meglio in assoluto e non posso vederlo giocare dietro la scritta Davis Cup (troppo lontano dalla linea di fondo, ndr). Deve stare coi piedi a mezzo metro dalla riga. I giocatori di talento che sono belli da vedere non sono giocatori di difesa, ma di attacco. Sono loro che conducono il gioco. Lui ha avuto un calo fisico, ma non mentale: sono due cose diverse. Lui sembra che si debba piacere in campo. Quando vidi giocare le prime volte Musetti, mi strofinai gli occhi e mi dissi ‘cosa è successo, finalmente un giocatore di tennis’. Poi in un torneo a Cagliari non riuscivo a vederlo perché era fuori dallo schermo a ridosso del tabellone. Quando l’ho visto giocare poi ad Amburgo, caso strano aveva i piedi dentro al campo. Era umile e questo gli ha permesso di ottenere ottimi risultati. Adesso si sta un po’ specchiando e lo vedo un pochino diverso, ha un po’ di problemi personali da gestire”.
