Nottata da umori alterni in casa azzurra in quel di New York. Se Jannik Sinner ride, Lorenzo Musetti piange. Il primo, infatti, si è guadagnato l’accesso agli ottavi di final dello US Open 2022, sconfiggendo 3-1 lo statunitense Brandon Nakashima. Il secondo si è arreso, con eguale punteggio, sotto i colpi del bielorusso Ilya Ivashka, che a questo punto – dopo aver fatto saltare l’ipotesi di derby italiano – sarà il prossimo avversario proprio di Sinner.

Sinner batte Nakashima 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2

Doveva essere un match duro e così è stato. Il coetaneo californiano ha messo in crisi Jannik all’inizio, con il suo gioco molto preciso e regolare, vincendo il primo set e ingabbiando l’altoatesino per buona parte del secondo. Per fortuna, proprio nel secondo set, c’è stato lo scatto di rendimento che ci si attendeva da parte di Sinner, che gli ha permesso di girare a suo favore l’inerzia del match.

Una crescita, quella dell’italiano nel corso del torneo, che fa ben sperare in vista del prossimo impegno. Jannik scenderà in campo da favorito, per provare a staccare il pass per i suoi primi quarti di finale allo US Open, l’unico Slam in cui non ha ancora raggiunto questo risultato.

Ivashka batte Musetti 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3

Niente da fare invece per Lorenzo Musetti, che ha comunque il merito di provarci fino alla fine, nonostante gli evidente problemi di vesciche alla mano destra che alla fine ne hanno condizionato il rendimento. Ottima comunque la prestazione di Ivashka, che dopo aver eliminato Hubert Hurkacz, si conferma contro un altro giocatore molto più avanti di lui nel ranking, dimostrando di essere “on fire” più che mai in questa edizione dello US Open: Jannik è avvisato.

Resta comunque un ottimo torneo quello di Musetti, capace di arrivare per la prima volta al terzo turno in uno Slam che, per il momento, ancora si sposa poco con le sue caratteristiche tecniche. Da migliorare la prestazione al servizio.

Attesa a questo punto per l’altro italiano qualificatosi per gli ottavi di finale di questo US Open, Matteo Berrettini. Il 26enne romano è impegnato oggi alle 17 contro Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Matteo parte favorito, ma occhio allo spagnolo, capace di exploit tutt’altro che scontati.
