Navratilova è stata una delle atlete più coinvolte nella difesa dei diritti degli sportivi omosessuali e per anni ha lottato in prima linea. Le critiche, però, sono arrivate spesso per le sue posizioni più conservatrici per quanto riguarda l’accettazione di atlete trans nelle competizioni tra donne. L’ex numero 1 del mondo non si schiera a favore di questa causa portata avanti dalla comunità LGBTQ+ per un semplice motivo: le atlete trans avrebbero una superiorità fisica importante perché in precedenza uomini.
Su Twitter la leggenda si è sfogata, commentando uno dei pochi post a suo sostegno proveniente dall’account della scrittrice JK Rowling.
“Questo commento di oggi significa molto per me visto che negli scorsi giorni sono stata chiamata nazista, fascista, razzista, bigotta, terf. Hanno detto che non faccio nulla per la comunità LGBT dal 1993 e che ho livelli alti di testosterone e che quindi non sono una vera donna. Le tue parole significano veramente molto per me”.
In un altro post, Martina ha esposto anche gli orientamenti di alcune sue ex colleghe riguardo la vicenda.
“Chris Evert mi sta dando molto supporto nella mia lotta. Steffi Graf non è mai stata inclusa in questi discorsi. Billie Jean King è sempre per l’inclusione quindi potrete immaginare la sua posizione e idea a riguardo”.
