Nella notte italiana è andata in scena la seconda tranche di match validi per il primo turno dell’Atp 250 di Adelaide. Ottime notizie per il tennis azzurro, che ha visto Matteo Arnaldi e Lorenzo Sonego staccare il pass per gli ottavi, dove sarà protagonista anche Lorenzo Musetti.

Il primo degli azzurri a calcare il cemento australiano è stato Arnaldi, poco dopo la mezzanotte italiana. Il giovane tennista ligure avrebbe dovuto affrontare Marton Fucsovics ma si è trovato al cospetto del Lucky Loser spagnolo Bernabé Zapata Miralles (numero 77 al mondo) per via del ritiro pre-match dell’ungherese.
In ogni caso, Matteo si è aggiudicato il successo imponendosi di giustezza per 6-4, 6-3 in circa un’ora e mezza. L’inizio del parziale d’apertura si è rivelato abbastanza combattuto e contrassegnato da diversi scambi di servizio. Poi la svolta è arrivata nel decimo game, col sanremese bravo a capitalizzare il terzo dei tre set point consecutivi che si era appena guadagnato in risposta. Molto più lineare il confronto nella ripresa, anche se sempre in controllo di Arnaldi, che alla fine ha mandato la pratica in archivio centrando il quarto break personale nel nono game.
Sonego, invece, è sceso in campo in mattinata per sfidare il tedesco Yannik Hanfmann (numero 49 al mondo). Anche il torinese ha ottenuto la vittoria, ma ha dovuto faticare un pochino in più, tant’è vero che la sua partita è durata quasi tre ore (2 h e 55 minuti) e si è conclusa col punteggio di 7-5, 2-6, 7-6. Da segnalare che l’azzurro, prima di prendersi il tie-break decisivo per 11 punti a 9, ha annullato due match point stesso durante il mini-parziale.

Superato il primo turno, Arnaldi e Sonego affronteranno agli ottavi rispettivamente il cileno Nicolas Jarry (numero 18 al mondo) e lo statunitense Sebastian Korda (numero 29 al mondo). Due avversari molto impegnativi, proprio come sarà molto impegnativo il debutto dell’altro azzurro in gara ad Adelaide, Lorenzo Musetti. Il classe 2002 toscano, reduce da un bye al primo turno, se la vedrà con l’australiano Jordan Thompson, numero 47 al mondo reduce dal successo in due set su Diaz Acosta e dalla semifinale raggiunta a Brisbane rimontando clamorosamente Rafael Nadal.
