In una recente intervista con la trasmissione cilena Podemos Hablar, l’ex numero 1 del mondo Marcelo Rios ha raccontato degli episodi avvenuti con due ex stelle del circuito a carriera ormai conclusa. Rios ha parlato della quasi scazzottata avuta con Pete Sampras al termine di un’esibizione a Santiago del Cile e delle ruggini con John McEnroe nel tour dei veterani.

Il racconto di Rios

Rios è stato uno dei protagonisti del circuito alla fine degli anni ’90. Un personaggio fuori dagli schemi che, con l’incredibile talento che l’ha contraddistinto, è riuscito ad arrivare al numero 1 del mondo nel 1998 senza vincere un singolo slam in carriera.

Nel 2008, a distanza di dieci anni dallo storico traguardo, si ritrova a disputare un’esibizione con Sampras a Santiago del Cile, per festeggiare l’avvenimento. Il racconto che ne scaturisce è qualcosa a tratti irreale.

“Pete Sampras è uno stupido, un tonto. Tennis e poi quasi boxe, per poco non ci siamo presi a pugni. Quando la partita è finita mi chiama per parlare ed è lì che è iniziato il casino. Gli ho detto che per me non era il Sampras di prima ed era solamente uno qualsiasi. Da lì è iniziata la lotta.

Si è arrabbiato perché ha perso. Ho pensato di colpirlo, di prenderlo a pugni, ma qualcuno ci ha fermato. Quello che è successo è che fin dall’inizio ci sono momenti dell’esibizione già prestabiliti: tu vinci il primo set, io il secondo e il terzo ce la giochiamo seriamente. Allora, quando mi chiama nello spogliatoio dice che Sampras non perde e io gli rispondo che non è più Pete Sampras. Gli ho detto di non venirmi a dire che era arrabbiato perché non aveva alcun senso.

L’organizzatore dell’esibizione è arrivato e mi ha fermato, ci ha separati. Sarebbe stato molto bello dargli un pugno in faccia. Immagina: una scazzottata con Sampras, una cosa storica. L’hanno salvato.

Il fatto è che non sono mai andato d’accordo con nessuno nel tour. All’epoca c’erano troppi gringos e non parlavo mai con loro.

Basti pensare a McEnroe, che di fatto mi ha cacciato dal tour dei veterani. Si comportava come se fosse stato il proprietario. Siccome andavo troppo bene, mi diceva che ero troppo giovane per giocare e che sarei dovuto andare via. Stavo prendendo tutti a calci nel sedere e non mi apprezzavano per quello. Non gli parlo molto quando lo vedo, non abbiamo nulla da dirci. Non è che non mi piaccia, ma odio quando in televisione deve rimarcare il fatto che non ho mai vinto uno slam”.
